The Judy Black Box

A conversation about the process of creating children’s books featuring Andrea Beaty (Lila Greer, Teacher of the Year), Amy Seto Forrester (Search for a Giant Squid), and Joanna Ho (Say My Name), with moderator Carrie Tillotson (B Is for Bananas). This discussion is all ages, meant for anyone who loves children’s literature.

Portland Book Festival General Admission Passes are required for entry into all events. Passes are $15 in advance and $25 day of Festival. Youth 17 & under get in FREE. All full-priced General Admission Passes include a $5 book fair voucher and entry into Portland Art Museum. Passes admit attendees to the Festival; individual events are first-come, first-served. Andrea Beaty

Andrea Beaty is the author of many beloved children’s books, including the bestselling Questioneers series, I Love You Like Yellow, Happy Birthday, Madame Chapeau, and One Girl. She lives just outside Chicago.

Amy Seto Forrester

Amy Seto Forrester is a youth services supervising librarian at Eugene Public Library (OR) who is passionate about diverse, engaging books for developing readers. She has a background in the performing arts and a love of puzzles, mazes, and other forms of interactive learning. Frustrated by the lack of diversity in books for beginning readers, she decided to write one herself. She is co-founder of the Guessing Geisel blog and has written for review journals including SLJ, Horn Book Guide, and Booklist. She regularly contributes to Kirkus Reviews.

Joanna Ho

Joanna Ho is the New York Times bestselling author of Eyes that Kiss in the Corners, Eyes that Speak to the Stars, Playing at the Border: A Story of Yo-Yo Ma, The Silence that Binds Us, and One Day. She has been an English teacher, a dean, a vice principal, and a professional development mastermind. Carrie Tillotson

Carrie Tillotson’s debut picture book Counting to Bananas, illustrated by Estrela Lourenço, was an Oregon Spirit Book Award Honor Book, Oregon Book Awards finalist, and selected for Amazon’s Best Books of the Year So Far. Before she started writing children’s books, Carrie worked as a biostatistician. Her job involved counting a lot of numbers (but not many bananas). She lives in Oregon with her husband and son, two dogs, and two chickens. Her new book is B Is for Bananas, illustrated by Estrela Lourenço.
