Pop-Up: Rebecca Clarren

Portland Art Museum

Rebecca Clarren pops-up for a reading in the Portland Art Museum galleries with her book The Cost of Free Land: Jews, Lakota, and an American Inheritance.

Clarren is paired with (Painfully Positive) 2.28.22 and (Painfully Positive) 3.7.22; found in the Black Artists of Oregon exhibit, on the 2nd floor of the Portland Art Museum.

An award-winning author investigates the entangled history of her Jewish ancestors’ land in South Dakota and the Lakota, who were forced off that land by the United States government. 

 

 

 

 

 

Portland Book Festival General Admission Passes are required for entry into all events. Passes are $15 in advance and $25 day of Festival. Youth 17 & under get in FREE. All full-priced General Admission Passes include a $5 book fair voucher and entry into Portland Art Museum. Passes admit attendees to the Festival; individual events are first-come, first-served. Bios

Rebecca Clarren

Rebecca Clarren has been writing about the American West for more than twenty years. She is the winner of the 2021 Whiting Nonfiction Grant for her work on The Cost of Free Land. Her journalism, for which she has won the Hillman Prize, an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship, and ten grants from the Fund for Investigative Journalism, has appeared in such publications as MotherJonesHigh Country NewsThe Nation, and Indian Country Today. Her debut novel, Kickdown (Sky Horse Press, 2018), was shortlisted for the PEN/Bellwether Prize.
