The Judy Black Box
Picture book and middle grade illustrators face off in a live drawing competition. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry with laughter, you’ll cheer as Cátia Chien (On the Tip of a Wave), Ben Clanton (Ploof), Jim Di Bartolo (Billie Blaster and the Robot Army from Outer Space), Andy Chou Musser (Search for a Giant Squid), and Salina Yoon (Penguin and Ollie) face off at the drawing easel. Host and emcee Aron Nels Steinke (Mr. Wolf’s Class).
Portland Book Festival General Admission Passes are required for entry into all events. Passes are $15 in advance and $25 day of Festival. Youth 17 & under get in FREE. All full-priced General Admission Passes include a $5 book fair voucher and entry into Portland Art Museum. Passes admit attendees to the Festival; individual events are first-come, first-served. Bios
Cátia Chien
Cátia Chien is a Brazilian Taiwanese artist. She's the illustrator of such titles as On the Tip of a Wave, with author Joanna Ho; The Bear and the Moon, which was a Society of Illustrators Gold Medal for Original Art winner and a Golden Kite Award for picture book illustration winner; and A Boy and a Jaguar, an ALA Notable Book and recipient of the Schneider Family Book Award. Her art has been shown in galleries worldwide, including the Beijing National Gallery and the Bologna Children's Book Fair exhibition. She is also the founder of A Thousand Worlds, a curated picture book directory celebrating BIPOC creators

Ben Clanton
Ben Clanton is the New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of the Narwhal and Jelly series. His other books for children include The Greatest in the World!, the first book in the Tater Tales series; Mo's Mustache; Vote for Me!; Rot, the Cutest in the World!; Boo Who?; It Came in the Mail; Something Extraordinary and Rex Wrecks It!. Jim Di Bartolo
Jim Di Bartolo is a mixed-media illustrator, painter, visual storyteller, and writer. In his freelance career, he has illustrated novels, comic books, and role-playing games. Laini and Jim live with their daughter, Clementine, and two cats in Portland, Oregon, and have never accidentally started an intergalactic war.

Andy Chou Musser
Andy Chou Musser is the author-illustrator of A Home Under the Stars, his debut picture book, which received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews and a silver medal from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. He illustrated Search for a Giant Squid, the first book in a series written by Amy Seto Forrester and is the co-author of Ploof with Ben Clanton. Andy has also created animation for a range of clients including ABC, Starbucks, T-Mobile and Warner Brothers. He lives on a cozy hill in Seattle, Washington, not far from wild forests and magical woodland creatures.

Salina Yoon is an award-winning author/illustrator of over 170 books for children, such as Penguin and Pinecone, Penguin on Vacation, Penguin in Love, Penguin and Pumpkin, Penguin's Big Adventure, Penguin's Christmas Wish, Found, Stormy Night, Bear's Big Day, Be a Friend, Penguin and Penelope, as well as the Duck, Duck, Porcupine chapter book series--including the Geisel Honor winner My Kite is Stuck!. She is also the illustrator of Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship by Marie Kondo. She lives in San Diego, California, with her family. Her festival title is Penguin and Ollie.
