Pop-Up: Incite presents Dean Backus, Trystan Angel Reese, & Karelia Stetz-Waters

Dean Backus, Trystan Angel Reese, & Karelia Stetz-Waters pop-up with a reading in the Portland Art Museum galleries.

They are paired with the artwork Mariconeo by Ivan Carmona Rosario; found in the Black Artists of Oregon exhibit, on the 2nd floor of the Portland Art Museum.

This pop-up is presented in partnership with Incite: Queer Writers Read. Incite is a curated reading series for Queer writers hosted by Vinnie Kinsella and Jennifer Perrine. Incite’s hope is to create conversation, connection, and greater understanding both within the Queer community and with other communities.

Darts and Flowers by Dean Backus

A funny, heartwarming queer YA rom-com about two childhood buddies who reunite in high school and launch a madcap scheme of blackmail, betrayal, and manipulation all in the name of friendship and love. 

 

How We Do Family by Trystan Angel Reese

As featured in People magazine: One LGBTQ family’s inspiring, heartfelt story of the many alternative paths that lead to a loving family, with lessons for every parent. 

 

 

 

Behind the Scenes by Karelia Stetz-Waters

Fans of Abby Jimenez and Meryl Wilsner will fall in love with this hilarious and refreshingly authentic novel about second chances, pugs, and finding the perfect muse. 

 

 

 

Portland Book Festival General Admission Passes are required for entry into all events. Passes are $15 in advance and $25 day of Festival. Youth 17 & under get in FREE. All full-priced General Admission Passes include a $5 book fair voucher and entry into Portland Art Museum. Passes admit attendees to the Festival; individual events are first-come, first-served. Bios

Dean Backus

Dean Backus is the solo author or co-author of over eleven plays, one of which (Thus With A Kiss) was runner-up for Best Play at the 1993 Seattle New Playwright’s festival, and another of which won Best Play at the 1996 San Francisco Fringe Festival (Is This Seat Taken?).  He appeared in Alyson’s 1998 anthology Wilma Loves Betty, and was featured in the book Gay Marriage Real Life (2006) by Michelle Bates Deakin. His novel Darts and Flowers was published in 2022 by Torchflame Books. He resides outside of Portland, Oregon with his partner, Jonathan.

Trystan Angel Reese

Trystan Angel Reese is a 2021 Lambda Literary Emerging LGBTQ Voices Fellow and the solo author of How We Do Family, a memoir described as “a refreshing new take on family life for the LGBTQ community and beyond.” He also co-wrote a children’s book with his partner, Biff. It’s called The Light Of You and was published by Flamingo Rampant Press.

Karelia Stetz-Waters

Karelia Stetz-Waters writes happily-ever-afters for women who love women. Her novels include the Out in Portland series and Satisfaction Guaranteed. Her most recent novel is Behind the Scenes. She lives her own happily-ever-after in Oregon with her wife of over twenty years. Karelia has a BA in comparative literature from Smith College and an MA in English literature from the University of Oregon, and she currently teaches English at Linn-Benton Community College.
